Commencal has redesigned their designated trail bike the Meta TR 29 for this year and it looks like it has been beefed up quite a bit.
The rear travel has been bumped up to 140mm. The front can be paired with either a 150 or 160mm fork, while the previous version was 130/150mm rear and front.
Modern geometry keeps on getting more modern — whatever that means. The seat tube angle on the Meta TR 29 is closing in on 80°, at 78.6°. The head tube angle is just as progressive at 64.5°, and it is getting long, at 1230mm for a medium sized wheelbase, and 465mm for a medium reach, moving 25mm up or down in either direction. Commencal gave the Meta TR 29 435mm-long chainstays.
The lines on the Meta TR 29 have changed also, and the frame looks like it is evolving. Commencal used “double-row” Enduro Bearings to maximize frame stiffness and clean up the pivots. Cable routing should be easier also, and the frame offers a better water bottle fit too. The seat tube has been shortened and they say it’s easier to fit a longer dropper post in the bike.
Commencal has updated the suspension kinematics to make the bike more lively, yet efficient.
Commencal says that it’s not just a “more comfortable XC bike,” although the last version of the TR 29 was certainly not that, but that it’s “a ‘mini-enduro’ which pushes the standards of agility and dynamism even further.”
Frames start at $1,500, and completes start at $2,200 for a build with RockShox suspension and a Shimano Deore drivetrain weighing about 35lbs.
The Meta TR 29 Signature comes with a Fox Factory fork and shock, a Shimano XT drivetrain, and DT Swiss wheels for a very reasonable $4,800. See more at the Commencal website.
